An auction house is an unusual interior because its surfaces are stage and workbench at the same time. A registration counter handles bags, clipboards, card readers and paperwork all day. A viewing gallery plinth carries a bronze that concentrates its entire mass onto four small feet. A condition-report bench has frames slid across it, loupes and raking lamps worked over it, and packing tape cut on it. The loading bay sees dollies, pallet jacks and crate hardware. Everything in the building is designed to disappear behind the lot.

That last point drives most of the specification. In a saleroom the stone is never the subject. It has to hold up structurally, stay visually silent, avoid throwing light or color at the object sitting on it, survive constant reconfiguration between sales, and be repairable inside the short window between one view and the next. What a Saleroom Asks of a Stone Surface

Color neutrality comes first. A warm cream limestone throws a warm cast onto anything placed on it, and under gallery lighting that shifts how a buyer reads the color and condition of a painting, a textile or a piece of jewelry. Strongly figured material is worse, because heavy veining competes for attention and makes photography harder. Quiet, even, low-chroma stone in a neutral grey or off-white register is the reliable choice for any surface that carries goods being examined.

Reflectance is the second constraint, and it is tied directly to conservation lighting practice. Museum guidance commonly caps illuminance at around 50 lux for highly light-sensitive material such as works on paper, textiles and photographs, and around 150 to 200 lux for oil paintings and less sensitive objects. At those levels a polished stone surface becomes a mirror of the light fittings and of the object itself. Specular gloss is measurable under ISO 2813 at 20, 60 and 85 degrees, reported in gloss units against a polished black glass reference, so a gloss target can be written into the specification rather than left to taste.

Third is mechanical abuse from ordinary handling. Crates get set down, hand tools get parked, dollies get swung against plinth bases, and grit tracked in from the street works as an abrasive under everything that slides. Calcite is a Mohs 3 mineral while quartz sits at Mohs 7 and defines that point on the scale, so quartz-bearing dust will scratch a marble counter simply by being dragged across it. That difference decides where soft calcareous stone is acceptable and where it is not.

Fourth is churn. Salerooms are reconfigured every few weeks: plinths move, partitions shift, lighting tracks change, and cable routes follow the layout of the current sale. Stone that has to be demolished to be moved is the wrong answer. Design in modules that can be lifted, stored and reused, and keep a documented attic stock so a damaged unit can be swapped rather than patched under time pressure.

Specifying Stone Zone by Zone

Reception, registration and settlement counters

These are the highest-contact surfaces in the building. They need a dense, low-absorption stone in a matte or honed finish, generous eased or small-radius edges, and a substrate that supports the full working depth rather than just the perimeter. Where the counter serves the public, the accessibility requirement is explicit: the 2010 ADA Standards require a portion of the counter surface at least 36 inches long and no more than 36 inches high above the finished floor, with clear floor space positioned for a parallel approach.

Detailing matters more than material choice here. Card readers, monitors and printers arrive with cables, so plan cutouts and grommets during fabrication instead of coring them on site later. Keep unsupported overhangs short, and treat the front arris as a consumable: it will take bag and trolley knocks, so a slightly softer radius survives far better than a crisp square edge.

Rostrum and podium surfaces

The rostrum is on camera for the length of every sale, lit hard from the front, and often streamed. A mirror finish there fights both the lighting design and the broadcast. A matte or lightly leathered surface in a neutral tone reads cleanly on video and does not blow out under key lighting. Loads are light, so the specification is dominated by appearance stability: pick a stone whose color is consistent across the run and keep a matched offcut for later repair.

Viewing gallery plinths and pedestals

Plinths carry the most demanding loads in the building, and they are concentrated rather than distributed. A bronze on four small feet, a stone architectural fragment on a timber cradle, or a piece of furniture on castors can put a very high stress into a small contact area. The design question is not the total weight the top can carry but the stress at each bearing point, which is why plinth tops are usually thicker than counter tops and are always continuously supported.

Toppling matters as much as bearing. A tall pedestal with a heavy object on it needs a base wide enough, or a fixing strong enough, to resist a lateral push from a visitor. Where the pedestal is a hollow box clad in stone, the cladding should not be doing structural work; build a steel or plywood core, spread the load into it, and treat the stone strictly as a face material with mechanical restraint at the top edge.

Catalogue benches, condition rooms and private viewing

These surfaces meet objects directly, so they trade toughness for gentleness. A very fine honed finish with minimal surface texture protects frame edges and gilding when a picture is slid across. Color neutrality is at its most critical in a private viewing room, where a client is making a colorimetric judgment under controlled light. Keep the palette quiet, avoid reflective trim in the sight line, and provide archival felt or padded mats as the actual contact layer.

Loading, packing and crate handling areas

Back of house is a different problem entirely. Floors and work surfaces here take pallet jacks, dropped hardware, screws, banding and moisture from wet crates. Specify a thick, tough, textured stone or accept that this is the one zone where a sacrificial surface makes sense. Floors should be slip-rated for the conditions: under ANSI A326.3, level interior floors expected to be walked on when wet are expected to deliver a wet dynamic coefficient of friction of 0.42 or greater.

Spotlight: Approve every saleroom finish under the gallery lighting it will actually live under, not under shop lights or daylight. Set a full-size sample on the plinth height, place a light-toned object and a dark one on it, and look at both from standing eye level. Finishes that seem quiet on a bench routinely turn into mirrors at 50 lux.

Finish, Color Neutrality and Light

Finish selection in a saleroom is a lighting decision more than a texture decision. Honed, matte, satin and lightly leathered surfaces scatter incident light rather than returning a specular image of the fitting above. Leathered and brushed finishes add a shallow relief that hides fine scratching, which is valuable on counters, but the same relief traps dust and can catch delicate frame edges, so it belongs on handling surfaces rather than on object surfaces.

On color, the safest register is a low-chroma grey or a soft off-white with fine, even grain. Pure brilliant white can read cold and can exaggerate any warmth in the object. Very dark stone works well behind pale objects but shows every fingerprint and dust trail under raking light. It also pays to know what you are actually buying: material sold commercially as black granite is frequently a gabbroic rock such as norite, essentially plagioclase with orthopyroxene, rather than true granite, and it behaves differently at the saw and the polisher.

Consistency across the run is a real risk on large packages. Blocks from different quarry runs can shift in tone enough to be obvious once they are lined up under even lighting. Lay out and number the slabs before fabrication, sequence pieces so any gradient runs with the room rather than across a single counter, and reserve the closest matches for the surfaces that appear together in one sight line.

Write the finish into the specification in measurable terms wherever you can. A named gloss target with the measurement geometry stated, a required sample approval, and a mock-up under project lighting will settle far more arguments than the word matte on a drawing. Fabricators can hold a gloss band consistently once they know the number; they cannot hold an adjective.

Point Loading, Testing and Structural Detailing

The relevant properties are all covered by published test methods, and asking for them is normal practice. ASTM C170 measures compressive strength, ASTM C880 measures flexural strength using two-point loading on specimens at the actual installed thickness with a minimum of five specimens per test condition, ASTM C1353 measures abrasion resistance by running abrasive wheels over the surface for a thousand revolutions and weighing the loss, and ASTM C97 measures absorption. Material specifications such as ASTM C615 for granite and ASTM C503 for marble set the required property list against which a supplier's data can be checked.

For plinths, the practical rule is to convert the object load into a bearing stress and then remove the stress concentration. A felt pad, a plywood spreader or a purpose-made cradle under an object turns four point contacts into a distributed area and protects the finish at the same time. Where a heavy lot is expected, build the plinth top with continuous support beneath the full footprint rather than relying on the stone to span.

Anchorage deserves the same attention. Stone cladding on pedestals should be mechanically restrained, not held by adhesive alone, because adhesive-only fixings fail progressively and without warning when the unit is repeatedly lifted, dragged and re-set between sales. Provide lifting points, mark the safe handling orientation on the underside, and keep unit weights within what the porter team can move without improvised rigging.

Acoustics, Services and Constant Reconfiguration

A saleroom is an acoustically demanding space: bidding depends on the auctioneer being clearly intelligible and on staff hearing bids from the phone bank and the room. Large expanses of hard stone are strongly reflective and lengthen reverberation, which smears speech. Stone can stay if the reflective area is balanced by absorptive treatment elsewhere, so keep the stone package on the horizontal working surfaces and let the ceiling, upper walls and seating carry the absorption.

Services need to be planned into the stone rather than added afterward. Rostrum and settlement desks need power, data, microphone and display cabling; plinths increasingly need low-voltage lighting or sensor wiring. Core the routes during fabrication, use recessed grommets that sit flush and read as part of the surface, and provide removable access panels in the joinery so the cable route can be changed without lifting the top.

Because layouts change constantly, favor repeatable module sizes and standard details across the whole building. A set of plinth tops in three or four sizes that share a fixing detail can be recombined for every sale, and a damaged unit can be replaced from stock. Bespoke one-off pieces are appropriate for the permanent reception and rostrum, and expensive everywhere else.

Repairability and Maintenance Between Sales

Plan repair before the first sale. Order attic stock at the same time as the main package, from the same blocks, and store it flat and protected on site. A matched offcut is the difference between an invisible repair on a Monday and a visible one that stays visible for a decade. Record slab numbers, finish specification and the fabricator's polishing sequence in the closeout file so the same result can be reproduced later.

Most saleroom damage is chips at edges, fine scratching on counters, and staining from adhesive residue, marker or packing materials. Small chips in a honed surface can usually be filled and re-honed locally, which is far easier than matching a polished surface. Fine scratching is addressed by refinishing a whole panel rather than a patch, because a locally brightened area is more noticeable than the scratch was.

Keep the cleaning regime simple and neutral. Stone-safe neutral pH cleaners, soft cloths and a strict ban on acidic descalers protect calcareous surfaces, and avoiding silicone-based polishes keeps the gloss level where it was specified. Sealer choice should be a penetrating impregnator rather than a topical film, since a film changes reflectance and will eventually fail in patches under handling.

Finally, build a short inspection into the turnaround between sales. Walk every plinth and counter looking for loosened fixings, opened joints, new chips and any surface that has visibly changed gloss where the lighting hits it. Booking those repairs into the quiet window costs a fraction of doing them during a view, and it keeps the room reading the way it was designed to read.
