MB Stone Care MB-12 Caliber Polishing Powder for Marble & Calcite Stone
MB-12 Caliber is a professional wet-to-dry polishing compound for polished marble, travertine, limestone and other calcite-based stone. It removes minor surface imperfections such as etch marks, water spots and fine scratches, and returns a glossy, lustrous finish to countertops and floors. Very little powder is needed per pass: coverage runs 500 to 1,000 sq ft per pound. This is a hot compound rated 5 of 5 for difficulty, so the stone must already be honed to a ready-to-polish state and the operator needs practice.

- Clean the surface of all debris, sand and dirt, and mask off anything that splatter could damage.
- Hone the surface to the highest clarity you can reach first. MB-12 polishes a ready-to-polish surface, it does not replace honing or diamond refinishing.
- Countertops: work 2-3 sq ft at a time. Sprinkle about 1/4 teaspoon of powder in a circular pattern slightly smaller than the polishing pad.
- Mist water from a spray bottle until the powder is fully soaked.
- Fit a white polishing pad to a variable-speed right-angle grinder or polisher. Variable speed is mandatory.
- Start at low speed with the pad on top of the powder, and spread the slurry across the target area at very low RPM under as much pressure as the machine will take, until the slurry is nearly dry.
- Pull the trigger fully while gradually easing off the pressure, moving the machine swiftly to buff the area to a shine.
- Floors: work 10-12 sq ft at a time with 1 tablespoon of powder, using a hog's hair pad on a floor machine of at least 1.5 hp running no faster than 175 RPM.
- Swing the floor machine side to side to spread the slurry, then polish slowly in a spiral pattern end to end until the slurry dries and the stone comes up shiny.
- Expect the first area to need a couple of passes for pad build-up. Limit each side of a hog's hair pad to roughly 100 sq ft, then flip it.
- Remove any streaking with a clean dry pad and a light mist of water.
- Wear gloves and safety glasses throughout and wash your hands after use. The powder is an eye and skin irritant.

What is MB-12 Caliber Polishing Powder and how does it work?
It is a highly potent wet-to-dry polishing compound. The slurry starts slightly wet and is worked with a pad until completely dry, and the fine abrasive particles buff calcite-based stone to a glossy, lustrous finish. Very little product is used compared with traditional compounds.
Which surfaces can I polish with it?
Marble, travertine, limestone and other calcite-based stone, plus serpentine and terrazzo. It works on both countertops and floors and on vertical as well as horizontal surfaces.
Does the stone need preparation first?
Yes. The stone must be honed to the highest caliber first so the surface is flat and consistent. In some cases abrasives or diamond refinishing are required before MB-12 will produce the intended result.
Why do I add water to the powder?
Water lets the abrasive grains move freely, which makes the polishing action more effective. A dry application is possible, but the wet mixture gives the best outcome.
What equipment do I need?
A variable-speed rotary polisher for countertops and spot work, or a heavy-duty floor machine for full floors. An angle grinder without variable speed and an orbital polisher are not suitable.
I am not getting the results I expected. What should I change?
Adjust the consistency of the paste first: more water or slightly more powder. Applying too much product makes the area much harder to polish, so try using less and repeating. Working pace also varies by stone type.
Will the polished floor be slippery?
Removing etch marks with this product does not make floors slippery, but any polished floor can become slippery when wet, so wipe up spills and let the surface dry.
Is MB-12 suitable for beginners?
No. It is a hot compound designed for professional use only, and improper use can cause further damage. Practice on scrap material before working on a finished installation.
